We say farewell to Dan Wieden, co-founder of Wieden+Kennedy and one of the most accomplished advertising executives in the world, with sorrowful hearts. At the age of 77, Dan passed away on September 30, 2022.
Although he was well-known for his work in advertising, most people were unaware that Dan was also a champion boxer with a distinguished resume. He started boxing when he was 12 years old, and he competed all his life, earning several honours and titles.
Dan Wieden was regarded as a talented manager and creative mastermind, and it was under his direction that Wieden+Kennedy rose to the top of the field as an advertising firm. Their most well-known advertisements include Subaru’s “It’s What Makes A Subaru A Subaru” and Nike’s “Just Do It.”
His Career :
Following college, Dan Wieden worked for Georgia-Pacific, which had its headquarters in Portland at the time. After working as a freelancer for a while, he was hired by McCann-Erickson, an advertising company where he first met David Kennedy. From its Portland office, this company handled the Georgia-Pacific client. When Georgia-Pacific relocated to Atlanta in 1981, McCann-Erickson closed its Portland office, and Wieden and Kennedy joined the William Cain advertising agency.
The two began managing the then-small Nike, Inc. account there. The two established Wieden & Kennedy on April 1 of the following year, their own advertising agency. Nike was one of the new company’s key clients, and Wieden created the “Just Do It” slogan for the sportswear manufacturer in 1988.
On the Advertising Age 100 list of the top 100 advertisers of the 20th century, Dan Wieden and David Kennedy were ranked number 22. He was one of the top 25 most intriguing businesspeople in America, according to Inc. In addition to being one of Time magazine’s 50 CyberElite, Dan Wieden has won Oregon’s Professional of the Year and Entrepreneur of the Year awards and is one of the 32 members of the One Club Creative Hall of Fame. The documentary Art & Copy by Doug Pray features Wieden. He quit doing everyday work for the business in 2015.

He is also listed in the Hall of Achievement at his alma mater.
Caldera, an educational organization for children in Sisters, Oregon, is one of Wieden’s other projects. Today, the agency has presence around the world, with offices in Delhi, New York, London, Amsterdam, Tokyo and Shanghai.
