In the Raleigh incident, 5 people were killed and 2 more were hurt; the teenage suspect, Austin Thompson, is in serious condition.
The parents of the 15-year-old suspect in the deaths of five people—including a police officer—on a Raleigh, North Carolina, nature trail asserted that their son had never displayed any indications that he was capable of committing such a crime. Let’s look more closely at the suspect in the incident in Raleigh.
Who is the Austin Thompson?
The Raleigh shooting suspect is 15-year-old Austin Thompson. Austin also murdered his 16-year-old brother James Thompson during this horrific shooting.
Austin was discovered to have numerous wounds, including a gunshot wound to the head. His mass shooting motivation has not yet been made public. Alan and Elise Thompson, his parents, claimed that their son is not this kind of person. They had previously lost their older kid, which made them sad.
Austin Thompson’s older brother, James Roger Thompson, attended Knightdale High School. Austin, according to the school yearbook, was a sophomore. Both brothers, according to the sources and the property records, resided on Sahalee Way in the Hedingham district.
Austin Thompson, a 15-year-old suspect, was the target of police teams, including K-9 units and a bomb squad, according to radio conversations that The News & Observer obtained.
After 9:30 p.m the suspect was apprehended with a serious head injury. As of Friday at five o’clock, only one residence was still protected by crime scene tape. The light that typically beams on Raleigh did not shine as brightly, said Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin during the council meeting.
According to city officials, a public vigil will also be held on Sunday at 3 p.m. outside the Memorial Auditorium. In addition, the city announced that it is creating a website that will link families and the greater Raleigh community to services for assistance.
The suspect’s parents’ Statement
Words cannot even begin to explain our agony and loss, wrote Alan and Elise Thompson in a statement posted by the suspect’s parents on Tuesday. Alan Thompson and Elise Thompson released the statement, which reads:
Our son Austin inflicted immeasurable pain on the Raleigh community. And we are overcome with grief for the innocent lives lost. All the family pray for the families and loved ones of Nicole Conners, Susan Karnatz, Mary Marshall, and Raleigh Police Officer Gabriel Torres. Us mourn their loss and the loss of our son, James.
“We pray that Marcille ‘Lynn’ Gardner and Raleigh Police Officer Casey Clark fully recover from their injuries, and we pray for everyone who was traumatized by these senseless acts of violence,” they added.
“We have so many unanswered questions. There were never any indications or warning signs that Austin was capable of doing anything like this. Our family will continue to cooperate fully with law enforcement officials and do whatever we can to help them understand why and how this happened.”
Austin was taken into custody last Thursday after a confrontation with authorities, according to a statement issued by the Department of Homeland Security. Austin was said to have serious injuries. It’s unclear from the document whether the suspect wounded himself on purpose.
